Deng Xiaoping takes over, 1978
-Deng Xiaoping, reformist leader of the People's Republic of China (PRC), tried to assure Taiwanese that if they rejoined China they would still have autonomy.
-This doesn't happen, but trade increases between the two of them.
-In 1987, Taiwan lifts its ban on travel to the mainland.
-Deng pushed for reunification of Hong Kong (Xianggang).
-Happens in 1997, which becomes a Special Administrative Region (SAR)
