Mao’s Death
· There was a power struggle after Mao’s death, which consisted of the “gang of 4” (including Mao’s wife)
· Chairman Hua takes over and he put less emphasis on heavy industry.

· Hua introduces many capitalist ideals that laid the foundation for modern Chinese Capitalism (which begins under Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s)

Subjunctive Question: Would this have been a better time to introduce different policy into the government of China? With the Soviet Union, much of the policy changes happened during the shift from leader to leader - if the gang of four hadn't been so pre-occupied with coming into power, could China's communism have been revised for the better?
