Little Rock
Little Rock is the name of a town in Arkansas where one of the more fanatical incidents of the Civil Rights movement took place. A group of students now famously referred to as the "Little Rock Nine," were registered to attend Little Rock Central High School, but were refused entrance to the high school due to the racial segregation policies in place there. Nevertheless, they tried to enter the school and attend class, but were denied entrance once again, this time on the authority of the Governor of Arkansas. It was not until President Eisenhower intervened that the Little Rock Nine were allowed to attend school (under the guard of the US military).
Little Rock Crisis
Subjunctive Question: What if this happened in some other place in the country? Was the location of this Crisis vital to its influence?
"They moved closer and closer. ... Somebody started yelling. ... I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the crowd—someone who maybe could help. I looked into the face of an old woman and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat on me."
