Soweto Massacre
-In 1976 black students protested that they needed to be educated in Afrikaans.
-A Revolt in Soweto and other townships resulted in 575 deaths.
-Steve Biko, a youth leader, was beaten to death by the police.
-The youth were very active in the ANC (African National Congress) after this.
-The “Total Strategy” was developed which involved sabotaging South African cities.
-Civil disobedience, strikes, boycotts and more violent measures continued to increase.
