Early Acts of Appeasement
-The USA did not join the early acts of appeasement.
-Germany joins in 1926 - pulls out in 1933.
-Lacked enforcement (only economic sanctions) and was too closely linked with the Treaty of Versailles.
-Nationalism was too strong (big guys don’t want little guys to tell them what to do).
-Japan owns South Manchurian railway and there was a military operation in 1931 claiming Manchuria (renamed Manchukuo).
-In 1932 League’s Lytton commission decides Japan to leave so Japan quits the league and invades northern China in 1933.
-League decides this conflict has no effect on Europe so they ignore the situation.
-Mussolini and Hitler take notice.
Italian Occupation of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), 1935:
-Italy had interests in the colony since 1895.
-Mussolini wanted to expand his empire (Imperialism).
-In 1934 an incident is set up where Italians are killed.
-Ethiopia appealed to the league.
-The League did not respond so Italy invaded.
-Economic sanctions threatened by League.
-Hoare-Laval's plan would give most of Ethiopia to Italy if fighting stopped. It undermines the league.
-People lose interest and Mussolini completes conquest.
-Signals end of the league (still exists until 1945).
-Germany rearms - militarizes the Rhineland.
-In 1935 Hitler introduces conscription in Germany.
-France, Britain and Italy form the Stresa front to condemn Hitler’s actions.
-In 1935, Mussolini signs the naval agreement with Hitler.
-March 1936 Hitler remilitarizes the Rhineland (Breaking the Locarno Pact)
