Role of the United Nations (UN)
Role of the United Nations during Apartheid was clear in position but vague and ineffective in action. In 1952, the UN officially condemned Apartheid (along with many other nations) and approached South Africa in 1961 (9 years later) with the stipulation of weak economic sanctions, then bolstered in 1962 by the attempt to expel them from the British Commonwealth (from which they pre-emptively withdrew).
In the vein of their earlier methods of approach to Apartheid, they classified it as a "crime against humanity" in 1980, again leading to little substantive action to abolish it.

Subjective Question: What if the UN decided to establish an equal democracy forcefully? Would this have effectively ended Apartheid, or simply made racial tensions worse?
