French and English Mandates
-After the Ottoman Empire was broken up, the French and British divided up the Ottoman territories into mandates (a legal status for territories transferred from the control of one country to another on behalf of the league of nations).
-The French and British's interests lies within the Suez Canal and the oil.
-The Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916 gave most of the territory to Britain. Britain received Iraq, Trans-Jordan and Palestine while the French received Syria and Lebanon.
-Arab governments were set up in all mandates except Palestine.
