The Iran-Iraq War,1980-1988
- In 1980, a revolution took place in Iran: The Shiite religious group (a more extreme strain of Islam) overthrew the more moderate Sunni government.
- For fear that the revolution would spread to the Shiite people in Iraq, Saddam Hussein invaded Iran (under the superficial plan of trying to re-capture previously Iraqi territory.)
- The war is finally resolved when the UN puts economic sanctions on Iraq in a formal 1990 treaty with no gains on either side.
- Inside Iraq, Saddam Hussein persecutes the "kurds" (Shiite population in Iraq) by killing them with poison gas (and other forms of persecution).
