The Israeli War of Independence, 1948
-The holocaust and the persecution of Jews in Europe led to many of them leaving to Israel.
-The Arab League was formed in 1945 in order to protest the Balfour Declaration (would make public the British support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine).
-France gave Syria and Lebanon independence in 1946.
-British fell out of favour with the jews under the guidance of the Zionist movement (a homeland had not been created yet).
-The British left the problem up to the UN in 1947 who then suggested a partition.
-Jews are happy with this; however, the Arabs are not.
-Arab radicals attacked Jews throughout 1947 and the Arab League had rumours of attacking the Jews once the British left.
-The day the mandate ended, the Jews under David Ben-Gurion attacked the Arab League countries.
-The Jews win, increasing their territory from the partition including the Negev Desert.
-Many Palestinians became refugees and many began terrorist attacks within Israel.
