The Cold War
A Bipolar world
American position:
American came out of WWII even richer than before, with 20 billion gold reserves out of a world total of 33 billion.
They had the largest navy, air force, and monopoly on nuclear weapons. Also had the largest trading and industry in the world.
Large influence in Asia and Europe.
Soviet position:
Largest land army
Production starting to gain momentum.
Stalin looked inward again, and tries to strengthen Communist sentiment at home, but also began to increase Comunist influence on Satellite states (Ukraine, Poland, etc.)
Many POWs from WWII hat were kept to work.
Show trials return.
Causes of Cold War
This war of ideologies (Communism vs. Democracy) had two main causes:
· Nationalism
· Imperialism
Fears and Concerns During the Cold War
The West deeply fears the spread of communism (Comintern)
Russia fears counterrevolution that would be fed by the money from the west.
Both fear the Domino Theory, the idea that if one country turns communist, then it’s niehgbours would turn communist.

The Beginnings of the War
"The Cold War isn't thawing; it is burning with a deadly heat. Communism isn't sleeping; it is, as always, plotting, scheming, working, fighting."

Subjunctive Question: What if the Soviet Union and the Allies had simply continued the combat of World War II instead of establishing the Cold War? Could the earth have survived the further use of Nuclear Weapons.
