The Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962
-American's supported a corrupt regime under Fulgencio Batista until the Cuban revolution in 1959.
-Fidel Castro then took over and aligned with the Soviets.
-The Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba was then put into action, however it failed due to the fact that air-support was not sent in as planned. John F. Kennedy was blamed.
-In 1962 the Soviets began to put nuclear weapons into Cuba but were noticed by U2 spy planes.
-At this point the US had 3 available options.
-They could diplomatically negotiate a settlement, attack, or put a naval blockade into place to prevent any ships from bringing Cuba weapons.
-The attorney general, Robbert Kennedy, convinced the Security Council to go with the naval blockade.
-Ships were turned around at the quarantine successfully and two letters were sent from Krushchev to Kennedy.
-Brinkmanship ensued and the U.N. got involved.
-The Russians then pulled out of Cuba in exchange for a removal of the missiles in Turkey at a later date.
-Directly resulted in the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1962.
