The Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976
-The Cultural Revolution of 1966 was and idea of Mao's.
-He wanted to have a 'pure' form of communism. The goal of the Cultural Revolution was to enforce communism in China by eliminating capitalism and traditional/cultural aspects of Chinese society.
-This returned Mao to a position of power after the failure of the Great Leap Forward.
-Red Guards began openly criticizing the government officials.
-Many people were upset about the Cultural Revolution.
Seen as targets:
-People who wanted to return to capitalism
-People who did not do manual labour (Specialists): Forced to work
-Anyone who disobeyed the "Little Red Book"
-The Red Guard got so violent that the PLA had to restore order. The Revolution ended by 1969.
-Zhou En-Lai became the Prime Minister in 1958 (was Mao's second in command).
-He avoided disaster of the Cultural Revolution by ordering the PLA to put down the Red Guards (social movement in the PRC who wanted to 'make china red from inside out').
-Under Zhou, "Going down" (getting your hands dirty) became a common part of Chinese life.
-'Barefoot Doctors' travelled the countryside bringing midicine and reporting on the status of health
