Malcolm X
Malcolm X was the leader of the Black Muslims in the United States during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. Coming from a broken home and raised in the foster care system, Malcolm X developed a transient and harmful lifestyle, dropping out of school and making money pimping and selling drugs. After being arrested, he discovered the Nation of Islam, and became one of it's most prominent leaders. He scoffed at the Civil Rights Movement and its emphasis on integration, preferring a black supremacy and self-determination. After visiting Africa and the Middle East he revised his Muslim views, describing his previous actions thus: "I did many things as a [Black] Muslim that I'm sorry for now. I was a zombie then ... pointed in a certain direction and told to march"

"While we did not always see eye to eye on methods to solve the race problem, I always had a deep affection for Malcolm and felt that he had a great ability to put his finger on the existence and root of the problem. He was an eloquent spokesman for his point of view and no one can honestly doubt that Malcolm had a great concern for the problems that we face as a race."
