Americans begins a process called Island hopping, where they would take major islands in the Pacific and left the smaller Japanese islands to wither on the vine. Some of the Japanese soldiers left on these islands thought the war continued into the 1970s.
Battle of Leyte Gulf, Japanese begin to realize they are losing the war and begin Kamikaze attacks.

Subjunctive Question: What if the Americans decided to capture and maintain the islands as they went toward Japan? Would this have facilitated their attack in the Pacific in a way to make it more efficient?
