The Weimar Republic
-After World War I, the Weimar Republic was created by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg.
-This turned a socialist group, the Spartakists League, into a German Communist Party.
-In January 1919, they tried to take over Berlin but were put down by the Freikorps (right-wing paramilitary group).
-The Freikorps (free corps) were an anti-revolutionary volunteer force. Army officers set it up as the army demobilized after WWI and was important in putting down the Spartakists and attacking Berlin a year later.
-Luxemburg and Liebknecht were murdered by the Freikorps.
